Portuguese Proficiency for International Students

CELPE-Bras is the Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese for Foreigners developed and bestowed by the Ministry of Education (MEC), applied in Brazil and other countries with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE).

CELPE-Bras is the only Brazilian certificate of proficiency in Portuguese as a foreign language officially recognized. Internationally it is accepted by businesses and educational institutions as proof of Portuguese competency and, in Brazil, it is requested by universities for admission in undergraduate and graduate programs.

CELPE-Bras tests oral and written communication skills in Brazilian Portuguese in a variety of everyday situations. In a single exam four levels of proficiency are evaluated: intermediate, high intermediate, advanced, and highly advanced.
