Pachamama / Titicaca

Now, we are going to the Titicaca lake area. At a height of 3810 meters above sea level Titicaca Lake is the highest navigable watercourse in the world, having an area of ca. 8400 km2.
Starting from La Paz, there are two ways to enter in Peru by the Titicaca lake area, through Copacabana passing by the Tiquina strait or through Desaguadero passing on Tiwanaku. In the picture, an aerial view of the Titicaca area, from the Lima - São Paulo Varig flight.
We choose entering passing through Tiwanaku, that is a pre-inca archeological center. Tiwanaku is located on Bolivia, at 70 km from La Paz and at 10 km of the Titicaca border (latitude 16º33'18, longitude 68º40'25).
Tiwanaku reached its apogee between 500 and 900 AD. In the Picture, the entrance of the Kalasasaya temple.
The external wall of the Kalasasaya temple.
One of the main sculpture is the Ponce monolith located inside the temple.
Another important piece of the temple is the "Portal del Sol" Gateway of the Sun.
In Tiwanaku there are several sculpted faces, they represent different civilizations, even of other continent. It seems that the America was not discovered by Columbus. Not even, he was the first to cross the oceans.
After visiting Tiwanaku we entered in Peru for Desaguadero. There is a lot of people here and we felt some insecurity. Perhaps because it was previous day of the Copacabana party. Anyway be very careful with your belongings and avoid the loaders of luggages. Here, we had the first contact with the lake.
The trip from Desaguadero to Yunguyo was taken with a small bus (about 2 hours). We decided to stay two days in Yunguyo because this city is my friend's birthplace Leliz.
Around Yunguyo you can find a beach called Queñuani, showed at the side.
Antônio (Leliz's brother), Leliz, Leandro, Andrez (Lelis's father) and Sandra on Queñuani beach.
Some fishermen boats on the Queñuani beach.
On central square of the Yunguyo downtown you can eat ceviche that is a raw fish with lemon, pepper and potato, typical of this region. Ceviche should be eaten in the morning, when the fish is fresh. In the picture, me eating a delicious ceviche.
Near to Yunguyo (Peru) there is another little city called Copacabana (Bolivia). We visited Copacana on August 06, exactly in the party day of the Copacabana virgin. On this day the small city is full of people that comes from close areas, mainly from La Paz.
In the picture a typical taxi of the Titicaca region.
The most important city of the Titicaca area is Puno. In the picture the central cathedral of Puno.
Near to Puno (ca. 50 km) you find a wonderful place called Sillustani. The place is an Inca cemetery.
The tumbs "Chulpas" measure 15 meters of height. See me on the base of the tombs.
You will stay hours looking at the wonderful landscape. Sillustani is the best tour of the Titicaca area.
In Sillustani you can find winter clothes and rudimentary craft.
Some alpacas on the landscape near Sillustani.
